Union Catholique internationale de la Presse (UCIP)
International Catholics Organisation of the Media (ICOM)

Communiqué

Following the decisions of the general assembly members and their meetings, we would like to officially make known the following:

The general assembly members first of all appreciated the fact that the organisation could realise a good number of formation and exposure programmes in spite of all the obstacles and constraints. They expressed their profound gratitude to all those who have helped realise these highly useful events.

The UCIP general assembly reconfirmed all the decisions of the general assembly 2010 and the dissolution of UCIP voted by the UCIP’s statutory members on 15 June 2011 and the creation of the International Catholics Organisation of the Media (ICOM) as UCIP’s legitimate successor with all rights.

The ICOM general assembly members who were UCIP’s statutory members emphasised that ICOM is an organisation, open to all media professionals irrespective of all differences. The ICOM will concentrate on its activities worldwide inspiring and encouraging media professionals from all parts of the world and promoting the rights to information, freedom of opinion and ethics of journalism. They also decided to keep the website "www.ucip.ch" in view of continuity and in addition to the new website “www.IcomWorld.info”.

After studying various offers, the ICOM general assembly unanimously voted in favour of Panama organising the world congress 2013. It will be for the first time this world congress will be held in Central America.

Considering the requests for maintaining the International Journalism and Media Awards, the general assembly has decided to maintain the awards and to re-conceive them in line with the present day situations.

Following the proposals for the statutory amendments since 15 June 2011, the general assembly voted on the Directing Committee instead of presidency.  The directing committee is composed of the office bearers who have been voted on 15 June 2011. The directing committee will be responsible for the whole organisation in conformity with the statutes while they accomplish their specific functions entrusted to them.

ICOM invites all media professionals who value freedom and responsibility to join the organisation and continue the highly useful activities in view of regular evaluation of the journalistic profession, networking worldwide and collective reflection.
